CFA Association Russia maintains the tradition of organizing regular professional events for the local financial community. On July 2, 2009, we held our first Summer webcast event. This time, we had the opportunity to meet with Jason Zweig, senior writer at Money Magazine, with a presentation "The Neuroeconomics of Surprise: How the Investing Brain Handles the Unexpected".

Jason Zweig made a presentation about the psychological hints that drive the investors' decisions. He explained such phenomena as pattern recognition, familiarity and other intuitive processes, which happen in our brains. As a conclusion, Jason Zweig provided investors with an insighful summary, as seen by neuro-psychologists, about the rules that a cautious investor should follow to avoid the traps of his own unconsious.

To name only a few, he explained how we can invert our emotions while making investment decisions, how we can analyze our 'sold portfolios' vs. our 'hold portfolios', or how to debias our hindsight.

In this webcast, Jason Zweig discussed the following:

• Unraveling how the human brain forms expectations about the financial future
• Understanding the physical and emotional effects of shattered expectations
• Reducing the shock of surprise with special policies and procedures

SPEAKER'S BACKGROUND

Jason Zweig is a senior writer at Money Magazine and has been a guest columnist for Time and CNN.com. Previously, he served as the mutual funds editor at Forbes. Mr. Zweig's new book on the neuroscience of financial decision making, Your Money and Your Brain, was published in September 2007. He is also editor of the revised edition of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor. A frequent commentator on radio and television, Mr. Zweig is the 2006 recipient of the lifetime achievement award for investor education from the Mutual Fund Education Alliance. He holds a BA from Columbia College.
