On December 12, CFA Association Russia and one of its long-time partners, Mazars, held a joint business breakfast focusing on the theme of successful portfolio building for clients of multi-family offices.

The event featured two experts – Vladimir Nikulin, CFA, a portfolio manager of the Lighthouse Capital investment fund, and Karolina Shalimova, a senior tax advisor at Mazars.

During the first part of the presentation, Vladimir focused on the ins and outs of portfolio management and various asset allocation strategies. He discussed in details pretty much everything one needs to consider when building a portfolio: asset classes, their pros and cons, risk factors and how to best avoid them, as well as how to evaluate the performance of a certain portfolio.

A successful portfolio management is often about finding a perfect balance between appropriate asset allocation, risk management, strategy, knowledge of investment strategies and even a gut feeling.

“Sometimes, feeling nervous following a small drawdown investors panic and rush to sell their assets losing in the long run. A high level of composure and faith is needed in these situations,” Vladimir explained while talking about some of the mistakes in investment strategy.

Following Vladimir’s presentation, Mazars’ own Karolina Shalimova, discussed the questions surrounding controlled foreign corporations (CFCs), companies that are registered and conduct business in countries other than the residency of their owners.

Although some may find it advantageous to set up businesses and invest their money overseas, it comes with an array of tax regulations one must follow to avoid a hefty fine.

There are instances when a CFC can get tax exemptions. During her presentation Karolina focused on these details and made sure to explain some of the details to guests who had many questions during the presentation.
